Ideally located deer property offers alternative options

Cath and Gene Sandbrook took over their 23-hectare Halcombe property in 2013.

Gene had been farming deer for the previous 45 years, alongside his plumbing and drainlaying business. Buying the property was his opportunity to step away from the business and focus on his deer.

He and Cath run stags and breeding hinds for velvet, and weaner cattle. Previously running sheep, the property also has a wool shed.

As well as the farm itself ideally suiting their needs and interests, its location has been a drawcard, as Cath explains.

“We love it here, absolutely everything about it. We are right on the edge of Halcombe, next to Halcombe School and with the high school bus is at the gate, 14 kilometres from the Feilding Saleyards, a 20-minute drive to Ohakea, while Bulls and Palmerston North are also nearby.

“Ohakea is growing in popularity. This house was originally built by someone who worked there. While it’s peaceful, if we need them, we have plenty of good neighbours to call on. Halcombe has a wonderful sense of community,” she says.

While they have greatly enjoyed the property, the time has come to downsize to either Feilding or Palmerston North, hence calling in Jacqui Campion of PGG Wrightson Real Estate, Feilding to present it to the market. Jacqui says with its location adjoining Halcombe and with a possibility to subdivide, the property has some strong options to go with its attractive homestead.

“A mixture of gentle rolling to flat land with road frontage on two sides, 14 deer fenced paddocks, and excellent stock handling facilities make for easy management, while the recently upgraded water system, along with the rural water scheme, and paddocks suited to cultivation, extend the land use options. In addition, ample sheds with headroom for large machinery and an enormous, light filled workshop are perfect for the contractor or tradesman.

“Features of the well-designed home that captures all-day sun include views to Ruapehu, four bedrooms plus ensuite, a high stud giving a sense of space, double glazing, a wood burner with wet back, a heat pump and a wraparound deck with seamless flow from all living areas. A well laid out garden has been created with low maintenance in mind, while the six-car garaging sits beside the house with internal access,” says Jacqui.

Intending to retire, Cath and Gene will consider selling as a going concern.
