New highway opens up lifestyle opportunities

A new Lower North Island east to west highway connection is set to open up lifestyle opportunities in districts previously considered too far to commute from.

Te Ahu a Turanga, the Manawatū Tararua Highway, is set to be a key connection between Woodville and Ashhurst, replacing the section of State Highway 3 that was closed due to a major landslip in April 2017. This 11.5-kilometre, four-lane highway will run over the Ruahine Ranges and is expected to be completed by mid-2025.

PGG Wrightson Real Estate Lower North Island Sales Manager, Wayne Brooks says the new road will benefit the regions on both sides of the range.

“In recent years we have seen how other districts have reaped the benefits of Transmission Gully, which cut travel times to Wellington, helping accentuate the appeal of Horowhenua as an attractive and affordable place to live.

“A similar dynamic is likely to play out between parts of Manawatū, Wairarapa and Central Hawke’s Bay. We are likely to see more appeal for lifestyle properties in more remote parts of these regions, with a commute to Palmerston North, Masterton or Napier becoming more realistic for more people, particularly for those able to work from home for a few days a week, therefore finding that the dream of a few hectares, fresh air and the rural idyll is suddenly within their reach.

“Localities such as Woodville, Eketahuna, Pahiatua and Dannevirke will likely be the first to witness these changes. As employers appreciate the positive aspects of remote working, where presence in the workplace is optional rather than required, living in such areas is becoming a more attractive alternative for a growing number of people,” he says.

As the Te Ahu a Turanga Highway moves closer to completion, it’s set to bring exciting changes for communities on both sides of the Ruahine Ranges. With improved connectivity, areas like Woodville, Pahiatua, and Dannevirke will become more accessible for those seeking a rural lifestyle while still staying connected to larger centers. This development opens up new possibilities for people looking to embrace the balance of small-town living and modern convenience, offering fresh opportunities for growth and community.
