A deer farm outlook and open space draw a South Canterbury couple to Meadowlinks

After living and working in the North Island for seven years, when Craig and Ange Climo moved back to South Canterbury in 2016, they vowed that they weren’t going to be cold again.

“We couldn’t find a Timaru property to our liking, nothing that was modern and warm, so we thought about building,” says Craig.

He also swears by the mantra that ‘today’s vista is tomorrow’s rooftops.’

“Having been built out a couple of times in my life as a house owner, I was wary,” he says.

Ultimately the couple headed to Meadowlinks, near Pleasant Point, which was offering 12 freehold sections of about 3000 square metres each. Each section came with a share in the deer farm integrated into the development, plus the walkway and wetlands it overlooked. Bounded by a golf course on two sides, the subdivision had an appealing outlook, and importantly from Craig’s perspective, couldn’t be built out.

“We have a farm view, without the work. We like watching the Bambis. They are all fallow deer, and managed by one of the Meadowlinks owners. The rest of us owners are quite specific that we will only allow fallow deer in the park,” says Ange.

They managed to ensure their new house was suitably warm. A modified Stonewood design and build, it faces north with plenty of glass, reaching 28 degrees Celsius on a July day via sunlight only, and about the same in summer. A large house ready to accommodate family and friends, primary school aged grandchildren have stayed for much of each school holidays.

With the grandchildren growing older and no longer needing the same space, Craig and Ange have decided it is time to downsize and move into Timaru, where they can enjoy being within easy walking distance of the town centre.

They listed their Meadowlinks property with Ricky McLeod of PGG Wrightson Real Estate, Timaru.

“We approached Ricky because of his reputation in the semi-rural market. That was borne out by the interest from farmers, as well as urban dwellers,” says Craig.

Ricky says Meadowlinks is something special.

“Many people leave the city seeking the great outdoors, only to become burdened with daily farm chores. Meadowlinks seeks to address this, providing privacy and proximity to nature, while maintaining many of the conveniences of easy city living,” he says.

Meadowlinks was developed to capture the best of both.

“When initially offered, the development presented a unique opportunity to live a rural lifestyle with views of mountains and meadows, located in the midst of the Pleasant Point Golf Course, and adjacent to the deer park, in which all residents own a share.”

Its botanic-like domain, and the house built there, make this a unique offering, reckons Ricky.

“More than just a home: it’s a private lifestyle precinct. Purpose-designed for serious entertaining, the home points due north and enjoys a one-of-a-kind outlook: deer grazing, rural calm, and mountain glimmers,” he says.

A pre-Christmas marketing campaign drew plenty of attention. Attracting multiple offers, the property sold successfully in early February, setting Craig and Ange up for their next chapter: a move into Timaru, within easy walking distance of the CBD.
