A private Springlands home with established gardens, sold after nearly two decades

When Tony and Karen Gill first fell in love with their Springlands, Blenheim home, it was the garden that sealed the deal.

That love affair continued for the next 18 and a half years. Now, having recently sold, they’ve passed the property on to its next owners as they look to downsize.

“It’s a lovely place to live: close to town and all the amenities, though in park-like surroundings, secluded, quiet and tranquil.”

Taking after his father and grandfather, Tony is the third generation of the family to lead Gill Construction, a well-known Marlborough company that has been serving the local community for 90 years.

They entrusted Greg Lyons of PGG Wrightson Real Estate, Blenheim, to bring their 0.36 hectare property to the market, where it has since been successfully sold. Given their deep roots in Marlborough, selecting an agent with strong local knowledge was important to them.

“Built in 1989 and extensively refurbished in recent years, this generous two storey, four bedroom home encompasses space, privacy and a superb Springlands location,” says Greg.

Tony and Karen finished raising their family there. Tony’s father also called the property home for a few years, living in a self-contained two-bedroom cottage added by the couple. The space offered flexibility, serving as accommodation for extended family and with potential for use as a home office or salon.

Despite its sense of seclusion, the property is remarkably convenient, with a shopping centre just up the road, supermarkets within a kilometre, schools 500 metres away and both the golf club and downtown Blenheim only a short drive from home.

Tony and Karen, not to mention their grandchildren, will miss the fully appointed pool and spa that they put in.

“Since we own more than fifteen diggers as part of the business, we couldn’t let that opportunity pass by, and the pool has given us countless hours of family enjoyment,” says Tony.

They fully landscaped the grounds, adding fencing, planting rhododendrons and camellias, and laying decking right around the house. Designed to appeal to keen gardeners while still being easy to maintain, the property offered a balance of beauty and practicality for its new owners.

“We’ve planted the gardens to flower at different times through the summer, including the rose garden as well as the azaleas. We really enjoy watching the seasons unfold,” they say, adding that a small vegetable garden has kept them supplied with fresh produce.

A ground floor double bedroom offers the option of single level living, while the remaining bedrooms upstairs provide flexibility for family or guests. A large mezzanine floor in the garage provides ample storage and has also served the family as a games room over the years.

Greg describes the home as one of Blenheim’s hidden gems.

“Tucked discreetly down the end of a peaceful lane, this sought-after address offered space, quality, and an unrivalled sense of privacy. Beautifully presented, generous in proportion, and perfectly positioned, it radiated charm and character at every turn.”
